Wurzledubz VW Festival – Somerset

wurzeldubz vw festival somerset live musicNext on the cards is a VW Fetival called Wurzledubz. The popularity of summer festivals in the UK sees thousands of people camping up and down the country. From Dog Shows to Donnington. There seems that every week someone is having a Festival. This May bank holiday Wurzledubz has its very own VW camper festival. It sees campers gather their fleets and head off down to Mill Farm in Somerset.  It is a lovely chilled out pleasant event meaning there is an emphasis on a family weekend. A great atmosphere for VW enthusiasts, campers and cider drinkers.

The site is really nice with an indoor and outdoor swimming pool and slide. A nicely stocked shop and brilliantly kept showers and toilets. There is also a field. In the field you will find a large marquee. In that large marquee you will find the music. Its like the dark, dark wood story.

Matt had been tasked to setup the sound for the festival and did a magnificent job. The sound was amazing. Our performance was received very well meaning we had been invited back to play this year as well.

Our set times had been for the Saturday night with funnily enough two other Liverpool based bands, Lunarcorona and Shoes For Brakes. We met the band when they had just arrived on the Friday night. The traffic being pretty bad on the M5 meaning they had taken the A roads mainly as did we. It took a while to reach the site. Once we arrived we had plenty of time to chat and jam with the bands and relax. The area we had been allocated was for the bands. It wasn’t long before we realised we were in great company, talking about the Liverpool music scene and setting up camp around the fire.

They have a similar setup to us and play a mix of covers and original music very well. They had the night of to a great start meaning people came into the tent to watch them play. As they played thunder clouds gathered around us and during a song the electric went off as the storm intensified.

The rain was hammering it down and the storm was directly above us. This meant that the electric was intermittently going on and off though the guys kept playing and people cheered as the electric came back on.

It wasn’t long before it was getting busy and by the end of their set a lot of people had been sat in the tent happily drinking a glass of cider.

There were stories and fear of musicians being electrocuted in the past. Generally by bad earth’s though and touching the strings of the guitar or microphone had been were shocks had occurred. Unsure whether to go on we had a slight hint of trepidation, though we decided to go ahead anyway and started to play. Thankfully we weren’t electrocuted to oblivion and played a good half hour before the electric went off. It cut off mid song, so we continued to play. We encouraged the audience to join in until the power had come back on.

It seemed the thunder was still sticking around. It was right over us and we could hear it crashing outside. The rain hadn’t dampened anyone spirits though. Within minutes the power was restored. A big cheer and back into the song we were playing. We happily played on ending the set off nicely with a few blues numbers and sing alongs.

Huge thanks to Keith and all the volunteers who work hard to make Wurzledubz a success every year. Its always a pleasure to perform at Wurzledubz. The crowd are fantastic and your always welcomed with smiles and cider.

Thanks for all the campers and families who came out to watch the bands. We appreciate the people that bought our CD’S and for dancing to our music. We had a great time although we couldn’t stay around for Lunacorona the next day. We are due to get married in a few days so we had to head back North. In conclusion it was a fantastic weekend with great people and great company.
