The venue tonight is at the Stanley Institute in Burscough, Lancashire. It’s a venue we know quite well and had performed at before.
What’s it like celebrating for a dragon from Dragons Den turning 50 today, well I’m sure it’s very nice indeed. Our performance was for a lovely man far from being any type of Dragon. This was the birthday however of Peter Jones of Lathom (I’m sure he’s heard all the Dragons Den jokes before). We had been recommended by Mike at the Hop Vine, Burscough to perform on his big day.
The night began with us looking for a back way in to carry the equipment to the stage. Preferably with as little fuss as was possible. We went through the back doors with our shiny new speaker bags and plonked them on the stage. As we had arrived early and as a result we had plenty of time to setup.
The catering had arrived safely though it was booked last minute according to the birthday boy. Therefore we thought a trip to the chippy would be in order though it was all setup beautifully.
We hadn’t been the first ones to arrive as the DJ was setup and waiting to go. We introduced ourselves to the Peter (the DJ not the birthday boy) and worked out how best to setup the stage as it was a shared space. Its can be tricky performing alongside a small minority of DJ’s. Some DJ’s do prefer to spread their gear right across the stage leaving little room for anyone else. Tonight was great though and the Peter was very helpful indeed. Offering his help, showing us where things were and plugging our gear in. A true Pro.
Not before long the balloons were up and our equipment was in place ready for a sound check. This venue has a high ceiling space (I believe it was a former cinema back in the day). This can cause problems sound wise. The sound just vanishes unless you have plenty of amps and watts. Luckily for us with we had our new QSC’S 1000w speakers. As a result plenty of power and sound coming at ya. It is more than enough to fill the room for the guests to have a party. A good investment indeed.
As the room filled the Peter started to fire up some great music to get people in the mood. A decent DJ hailing from Skelmersdale, doing a great job and playing great tunes.
Just before we were about to start we introduced ourselves to Peter Jones and asked when he would he like us to start? We scheduled for a 9pm start. We got the drinks in, had a quick backstage hug, power prayer and started to play.
A while in to the set, the dance floor was starting to become filled. The music was going down very well. These people were up for a party. Just how we like it. After our first set we had a break and Peter said a few words on the microphone to his guests. He was humbled to have everyone who had attended. He told his guests how fortunate he was to share his day with family and friends. Afterwards we played our last set and everyone got their dancing shoes on, with just enough energy on reserve saved for the DJ set after our performance.
It was a great gig, nice sound, lovely people, good vibes and great food. It was a pleasure to perform for you all and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Until next time.
