After our recent honeymoon in Europe it was back to work and to our next gig at the King’s Arms in Cheshire.
We have played at the King’s Arms for the last few years now. James and Helen have booked us regularly throughout. They have live music on every Saturday night. It is one of the best pubs we perform at as the clientele are always a pleasure. They are very welcoming and hospitable. It is usually a great night for us and your almost guaranteed to have the audience dancing by the end of the night.
When we arrived and entered the pub we noticed it was very quiet, this gave us plenty of room to swing about and set our equipment up. The pub has different rooms and a 360 degree bar. Meaning you can sit and watch a band performing from the front or the back of the pub. Annexed on to the pub is a Thai restaurant called Phantong. It is always busy when we arrive. We think that some of the people wander into the pub afterwards but have never found out if that’s true or not. After we setup we were greeted by Helen who is co-owner of the pub. Helen mentioned it was very quiet due to everyone being on holiday.
We were asked to start later than usual to see if people would maybe come in later. Thinking that it would be a quiet evening we hung around outside and waited to see what would happen. Amazingly people began to arrive in hoards and as 10pm approached it seemed out of nowhere the pub was full to bursting. How’s that for a turn around. The Kings Arms is one of those pubs that tends to get busier later on. We often joke that everyone has driven for miles to come and see The Rag Tag Misfits.
Now that we had a packed house in The Kings Arms it was time to start playing. Building the set up nicely we had a great audience and some familiar faces to play to. A couple who come into to watch us sat contented in the corner as we belted out some tunes.
The gig was going brilliantly. We finished up the first set and chatted to our allegiance of fans, it was going really well. Sometimes when you play live you get total brain freeze and forget what you were supposed to be doing. Tonight was one of those occasions. For whatever reason it was perhaps a lack of concentration or an impending ear infection. Messing up some chord changes or forgetting a lyric or two it can and does happen. You know the audience hasn’t noticed but as a musician its very frustrating.
The second set was played much better therefore our audience stayed till past midnight. The party atmosphere in the pub continued, donning hats, jiving and doing the splits ending the night off in spectacular fashion, our job was done. We should mention that the landlady of the pub is an expert of doing the splits. Everytime we perform their we request that Helen shows off her party trick. It is quite spectacular. As we packed up after a decent and packed out night, we loaded the van and in the early hours of the morning left from home.
Heres a little video of our lovely audience doing the twist
The normal journey from Wilmslow takes around an hour this time however it was 2 and a half hours as the police had shut a major road off. Meaning the only way back seemed to be through Manchester. Luckily thanks to R2D2 we found a way and was tucked up in bed for 3am, A small price to pay for what was a decent gig. Thanks to James for your ongoing support and to our lovely audience for your encouragement. We’ll see you all again soon.
