Tonight’s venue was Halsall Village Hall. Following a previous performance we had been approached by the owners of cheese stall about performing at a private party. The cheese stall is run by Carolyn whose 60th birthday was fast approaching. Her husband Neil had booked us for the occasion. The venue for the party was to be held at Halsall Village Hall, we would be providing the entertainment and they were to provide the audience and of course the cheese.
We drove to Halsall Village Hall, albeit a local gig; finding it wouldn’t be a problem or so we thought. As we approached the building we assumed it would be, we soon realised we were in the wrong place. So we had to drive round a bit looking for it. It reached a point where we tried to contact the party to check the road name. After some driving around we realised it was in a different place than we originally thought. Thank goodness for the Sat Nav. We parked up and unloaded.
We were met by Carolyn’s daughter who was trying to organise the room organised in time for the guests arrival. We were informed that we were to enter through the back door but we must keep in closed due to the wind. Apparently there had been incidents of parts of the ceiling coming down. Its that square type ceiling like in school were you can remove them like tiles.
There wasn’t long to go and the tables needed erecting, banners putting up and food preparations sorting. We eagerly set our equipment up in the hall and did a quick sound check. The running order of the night was to be a pre chosen play list of Carolyn & Neil’s choice. Followed by Neil’s set on the Ukelele ( his first time playing to an audience). Also there was Robbo doing a set in between our sets of live music. It was to be a packed night of entertainment with some delicious cheese I might add.
As the room was organised it wasn’t long before the guests arrived. Halsall Village Hall was transformed they had done a fantastic job. We set the Ukulele up for Neil’s set having sorted out some technical problems. Then Robbo had his own equipment to the side of us all ready for later in the evening. Robbo had a lovely Yamaha Acoustic and a carbon fibre guitar with him. It looked great and sounded great too.
Neil started the night off with his Ukelele in. Watching from the back of the room he played a few classic rock/pop songs to an attentive audience. It was fantastic for a first gig. I remember our first gig and he looked nowhere near as nervous as we did. During our first gig my voice represented a sheep as my voice wobbled in front of the audience. I dont think you ever forget your first gig although the audience were appreciative I was a nervous wreck.
Anyway, it was soon time for us to play some music as the room was now filled with people sat chatting and drinking. The Real ale that was on tap from the kitchen area was going down a treat as we’re we. After we finished our first set of music to an appreciative audience we had a break whilst it was Robbo’s turn to entertain. Gigging regularly he played a great set of songs and kept the audience entertained.
After sampling some lovely Zesty flavoured cheese we plugged in and started to play our last set for the night. After the first song a birthday cake was lit funnily enough made of cheese. We obliged and sang happy birthday to Carolyn who also said words of thanks to her guests whilst trying to hold her emotions back. Thanking everyone for turning up it seemed she was delighted and so happy to the point of tears that everyone had turned up for the celebration.
After that we played on a while and everyone got up for a dance on the hall floor. It was a great end to the night and we had everyone up dancing for a good 40 minutes, a lovely gig in nice surroundings with lovely people who we had the opportunity to entertain.
Thank you to Carolyn & Neil for booking us and Happy Birthday wishes.
